The History Behind Valentine's Day
Today, Valentine's Day is most associated with consumption in the form of gifts, candy and flowers.
But how did Valentine's Day come about and why did we start celebrating this particular day?
It all started with Saint Valentine, who is said to have arranged Christian weddings in secret, something that was strictly forbidden by Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century.
During the Middle Ages in Britain and France, the celebration of Valentine's Day began to become more romantic, similar to how we celebrate it today. February 14 was believed to be the day when birds formed pairs, and young people in the villages therefore formed pairs for play on Valentine's Day. During the 15th century, the first Valentine's cards also began to appear.
Like many traditions and commercial days, the United States was early in commercializing this day. In the 1840s, paper merchants began printing Valentine's cards to sell.
In Sweden, Valentine's Day was only established in 1985 when the holiday was entered into our calendars.
Since then, Valentine's Day has evolved more and more and it is certainly wonderful to celebrate a day of love in the middle of the February darkness!
