The story behind Singles Day

The holiday started in China in 1993 when a group of Chinese students at Nanjing University joined together to celebrate their status as singles and as the singles' answer to Valentine's Day.
Singles Day spread via the internet and is today one of the world's biggest shopping days.
The fact that the date was exactly 11/11 also has a special history. The number 1 stands for a person and independence but together the four 1's form a community.
